Below is a list of the areas to which SEF distributed grants from 1999 to 2005.

LOOKING FOR GRANT MONEY?

The Self-Education Foundation is no longer active as a grantmaking
organization.

SEF transferred our remaining $4,000 in savings to RESIST, an activist grantmaking organization with similar values and grassroots focus. While RESIST does not focus on education-related activism, we believe that many of those seeking grants from SEF will find RESIST to be a relevant, user-friendly
grantmaking resource.

RESIST also offers a great
one-page breakdown of grantmakers that are part of the Funding Exchange, a national network of alternative foundations committed to funding progressive grassroots organizing.

And a
list of Black United Funds, established in 1974 as "a mechanism
to organize the human and financial resources of Black Americans" to
support their own growth, development, and empowerment.

For a much broader list of progressive grantmakers, check out The
National Network of Grantmakers. Their mission states "NNG shares a vision of civil society that celebrates diversity and supports self-determination for all people." Click here for a list of affiliated funds.

OTHER RESOURCES FOR FUNDRAISERS

Check out RESIST Fund's excellent and thorough guide, Finding Funding: A Beginner's Guide to Foundation Research and their guide to organizations that offer assistance in the business of running an activist organization:

North Star Fund's
one-page tip sheet for grant applications.

The National Network of Grantmakers offers a "Common Grant Application" (CGA) which many progressive grantmakers have agreed to accept. It's a great tool for building a powerful grant application that can be changed as needed for individual applications, even if they don't take the CGA.

ARE YOU A PROGRESSIVE YOUNG DONOR?

SEF worked with lots of young donors, from those who sent $1 or $5 donations to those who gave in the thousands- over 150 people made their voices heard as SEF donors. Some of our donors are part of what Billy Wimsatt called "The Cool Rich Kids Movement." If you are a young person with wealth, meaning you feel that have more than you need and you want help figuring out what to do, check out
Resource Generation. RG works with young people with financial wealth who are supporting and challenging each other to effect progressive social change through the creative, responsible and strategic use of financial and other resources. (SEF Founder/Director Emily Nepon is a member of RG's Board of Directors)

ARE YOU A YOUNG PERSON WORKING IN PHILANTHROPY?

For those under 35 and working in the field of philanthropy, either as staff or donors to grantmaking organizations,
Emerging Practicioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) is an excellent resource. EPIP's mission is to support and strengthen the next generation of grantmakers, in order to advance effective social justice philanthropy. EPIP offers networking opportunities, leadership development, and build an advocacy voice for younger leaders.
